EMDR therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy proven to help people recover from trauma. EMDR can also alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, OCD, and some other conditions.
EMDR therapy targets a traumatic memory using back-and-forth movements (typically eye movements). It is designed to resolve unprocessed traumatic memories. Rather than focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors resulting from trauma, EMDR allows the brain to resume its natural healing process.
EMDR therapy is built on the premise that every person has the natural ability to heal. We all go through difficult situations in life. Often, we are able to integrate the information (images, sights, sounds, feelings, sensations, thoughts) from these events into our life story ourselves or with the help of friends and family. Sometimes, we need a little help with this process, and EMDR therapy provides this help.
In order to understand together whether EMDR is right for you or not, we should talk! It will depend on many things: your current living situation, any medical conditions you have, and where you currently are in your healing journey.
Why is EMDR so popular? Well, for once, it doesn't require you to talk about what happened in order to get better. Another reason is that it is very structured and keeps both the therapist and the client on track.
If EMDR is not a good fit for you - not to worry! There are many other approaches that can work equally well. Let's talk and find out where you are.
